The discussion was held by panelists Freda Fiala (Kunstuniversität Linz / University of Arts Linz), Alfred Gerstl (University of Vienna and CEIAS), Kristina Kironska (CEIAS and Palacký University Olomouc), Julia Marinaccio (CEIAS and Fachhochschule Kärnten/Carinthia University of Applied Sciences) and Matej Simalci (CEIAS). Since 2020, Europe-Taiwan relations have intensified at both the EU institutional level and among EU member states. While most European countries are increasingly open to engaging with Taiwan, they are doing so at different speeds and with varying risk appetites. A new study by the Central European Institute of Asian Studies (CEIAS) groups European countries into four categories: old partners, new friends, pragmatists, and laggards. In this panel discussion, Taiwan’s relations with the European Union and selected European countries, particularly Austria, Czechia, Norway, and Slovakia, will be examined.
