Chinese scholars in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have linked president-elect Donald Trump with bringing less predictable tension to the US-China relationship, while his isolationist foreign policy approach might open up new opportunities for Beijing.
Looking ahead, which are the areas of greatest tension in the US-Chinese relationship, as well as with the EU, and where do new opportunities emerge for whom? To what extent will different assessments between the Chinese party state and among Chinese scholars vis-à-vis the US and Europe continue to exist?
In our latest analysis of the China Spektrum project, “Chinese scholars highlight prolonged US-China competition”, we have analyzed Chinese scholars’ realistic assessment of continuous tension with Washington and their hope for a more balanced relationship with the EU.
We will discuss these findings as well as the perspective of Chinese experts in the US and Europe on the future relationships between Washington, Beijing and Brussels.
Our speakers are:
Wu Guoguang, Senior Research Scholar at Stanford University, affiliated with the Stanford Center on China’s Economy and Institutions (SCCE). Wu received a Ph.D. and a MA in politics from Princeton University (1995; 1993), a MA in journalism/political commentary from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (1984), and a BA in journalism from Peking University (1981). Wu is a renowned expert in Chinese politics and a popular global media commentator on China’s current affairs. His research focuses on Chinese politics and comparative political economy.
Yu Xiaohua, Chair of Agricultural Economics in Developing and Transition Countries, Georg-August-University, Göttingen, Germany.
