Im Rahmen des von der Forschungsinitiative 2024-2028 des Landes-Rheinland-Pfalz geförderten Projekts Digital Sovereignty for Europe (DigitS) ist zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt folgende Stelle zu besetzen:

(E 13 TV-L, 50%, befristet zur Qualifikation nach WissZeitVG, bis maximal zum 31.12.2026. Die Anstellung soll zur wissenschaftlichen und persönlichen Qualifizierung dienen und bietet die Gelegenheit zur Promotion.)
Diese Aufgaben erwarten Sie
Im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Forschungsprojekts (Rechts-, Medien-, Wirtschaftswissenschaft, Sinologie, Politikwissenschaft, Computerlinguistik) untersucht der Stelleninhaber/ die Stelleninhaberin den Umgang von großen Digitalplattformen mit der EU-Digitalgesetzgebung (z.B. Digital Service Act und Digital Markets Act).
Im Fokus sollen insbesondere unternehmerische Strategien und Handlungsoptionen der Digitalplattformen gegenüber Auflagen und Regulierungsbestrebungen stehen. Hierbei ist eine vergleichende Analyse zwischen US-amerikanischen und chinesischen Unternehmen angestrebt.

Information Sessions and Call for Applications for the MA programme Modern East Asian Studies (MEAS) at Goethe University Frankfurt
The Modern East Asian Studies (MEAS) programme at Goethe University Frankfurt invites students interested in the programme to attend an online information session on 30 April, 12:00 (CEST). A second meeting will be held in person on 23 May, 18:00 (CEST) on Goethe University’s Westend campus (SH 1.104).

MEAS, an international, interdisciplinary and research-oriented graduate programme, is an English-taught degree primarily designed for students who hold a BA degree in either East Asia-related humanities or the social sciences (economics/management, law (BA or first state examination), political science, sociology), history or cultural anthropology. Students explore East Asia’s present and past from the combined perspectives of a variety of disciplines. They develop their methodological and theoretical skills particularly in the fields of history, law, management and political sciences, while also enhancing their proficiency in Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese or Korean. In their third semester, students follow one of three possible ‘study tracks’. The Research Track prepares students for future academic work and is taught entirely in Frankfurt, whilst for the Language Track and the Professional Track student spend time in one of the East Asian countries covered by the programme, either studying at an East Asian university or completing an internship. MEAS students benefit from the vibrant research activities and events at Goethe University’s Interdisciplinary Centre for East Asian Studies (IZO).
The application deadline for the winter semester 2024/2025 is 15 August 2024. If applicants need a visa, we recommend applying by 15 July at the latest. Literature Can Think: Debating Utopia in Modern China

Utopia, as a literary genre, a type of political thought, and a method of speculative inquiry, was
introduced to China in the late Qing era. Through modern times, multiple utopian projects were
conceived, debated, and contested by writers, thinkers, and political activists, to the point where
utopia morphed into dystopia and literature became politics. This lecture seeks to rethink the
dynamics of modern Chinese utopia as manifested in forms from fiction to conceptual
treatises and political manifestos. The cases discussed will include Lu Xun, Shen Congwen,
Zhang Jingsheng, and Mao Zedong.

This lecture invokes fiction as one of the most polemical ways to engage with Chinese
(post)modernity. It takes as its point of departure President Xi Jinping’s 2013 call to “tell the
good China story,” not only explicating the “fictional turn” of contemporary Chinese cultural
politics vis à vis the world, but also tracing its genealogy to early modern times. Inspired by
Hannah Arendt’s notion of “the fearful imagination,” the lecture tries to answer the question:
Why does fiction and storytelling matter in China and the rest of the world, not only through the
modern period but also in the contemporary era?

Am 18. April ab 18 Uhr stellt Frau Amanda Shuman (Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg) das Projekt „Maoist Legacy Database” in ihrem Online-Vortrag „Handling „lingering historical issues”: Using the Maoist Legacy database to examine justice in the post-Mao era” vor. Sie wird insbesondere auf die Nutzungsmöglichkeiten der bestehenden Datenbank eingehen.
The Maoist Legacy Database (MLD) was initially created as part of the ERC-project, „The Maoist Legacy: Party Dictatorship, Transitional Justice, and the Politics of Truth,” directed by Daniel Leese at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Over the course of 5 years (2014-2019), the project team collected and curated documents for the database related to the research topic and beyond. This talk will introduce the kinds of materials in the database and research possibilities through a discussion of the primary resulting research projects, three outstanding PhD dissertations, a monograph, and two groundbreaking co-edited volumes examining top-down and bottom-up efforts at justice in the post-Mao years. It will highlight the breadth of what’s available and discuss how scholars around the world are now using the database, both for their research and as a teaching tool.
