Applications are invited for appointment as Non-Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Chinese Buddhist Studies in the Centre of Buddhist Studies (Ref.: 532109), to commence on September 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a four-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal.
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. degree in Buddhist Studies, Religious Studies, or in a related discipline from a University with a strong international reputation. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong record of publication, and potential for continued distinction in research and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Successful candidates would be conducting research on Buddhist Studies in Chinese contexts. Special preference will be given to those utilizing classical Chinese primary sources and focusing on cross-regional and transcultural interactions between various schools of Buddhism. Special consideration will be given to those who also have the ability to read Sanskrit, Tibetan, Pāli, Gāndhāri, Japanese, and who have a strong background in the critical study of Mahāyāna texts. The ideal candidate would also have the skills and capacity to initiate research collaborations with academic institutions and organizations both regionally and internationally.
The appointee is also expected to contribute substantially to the Centre’s strategic development by fostering academic collaborations and knowledge exchange; by participating in the development of interdisciplinary research initiatives; and by applying for competitive research grants. He/She is also expected to design undergraduate and graduate courses; deliver innovative teaching; attract and supervise international research students; and contribute to the effective operation of the Centre. The current teaching load is set at four courses per year.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 15% of basic salary. Other benefits include annual leave and professional leave, medical benefits, and free access to on-campus gyms and libraries. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
