Conference Title:
Lessons Learned: Navigating Experiences from Sino-European Cooperation for Future Global Engagements

Date: July 7-8, 2025
Location: RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany

We invite (in particular, but not exclusively) contributions from researchers in the fields of Sinology, East Asian Studies, Political Sciences, Philosophy/Ethics, Innovation Research as well as practical reports and contributions to discussions from universities, research centers and think tanks. We encourage contributions that critically reflect on how academic cooperation with China is perceived and shaped in Europe today and what implications this has or could have for cooperation with other countries. In this context, we want to examine various dimensions such as the legal framework for international partnerships, political and economic considerations and the risks for the innovative capacity of European research. Furthermore, it is important for us to consider societal interests and European values that shape our cooperation efforts and to consider the ethical implications of international scientific cooperation amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions. The aim of this conference is to highlight key findings and to open questions related to these collaborations and to draw lessons from past experiences that may be useful for future international cooperation in education and research with (countries other than) China. This event is organized as part of the ENTRANCE project, which is funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research/BMBF). The conference will take place in person at RWTH Aachen University, providing a platform for meaningful dialogue among scholars, practitioners, and policymakers on the evolving landscape of international cooperation in higher education and research with a particular focus on China.
