The Vienna Center for Taiwan Studies was formally established in the Department of East Asian Studies/ Sinology at the University of Vienna in December 2009 with an inauguration lecture by the first Taiwanese guest professor, Professor Li-chung PENG, of National Chengchi University on the concept of Taiwan studies.
The Center has since run several bi-lateral Austrian-Taiwanese conferences at the Department of East Asian Studies. The Center also organized Vienna participation in the alternate Taiwanese conferences of 2010 and 2012.
The Center regularly stages Taiwan film presentations and hosts guest researchers from Taiwan.
Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik
Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik served as Vice-Rector for Research and Promotion of Young Researchers and first Deputy Rector from 2011 to 2015. The sinologist had been Dean of the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies since 2010 (2004-10 Vice-Dean); she was appointed to the University of Vienna in 2002. From 1999 to 2001, Weigelin-Schwiedrzik was Prorector for International Relations at Heidelberg University, where she was also a member of the Senate from 1996 to 1999 (appointed to Heidelberg University in 1988). Throughout her career, Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik held numerous guest professorships outside of Europe (including Peking University, University of California at Berkeley/USA).

Dr. Astrid Lipinsky, M.A.
Astrid Lipinsky teaches on gender, society and law in modern China and Taiwan (from 1895) at the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Vienna. She is also administrative director of the Vienna Center for Taiwan Studies and the editor of the Vienna Taiwan Studies Series (peer-reviewed). Since 2014, Dr. Lipinsky is a member of the board of the European Association of Taiwan Studies EATS.
Astrid Lipinsky established the Vienna Taiwan Lecture Series in 2012 that is currently supported by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation, by the Education Division at the Vienna Taipei Office, and by the University of Vienna. The Series have hosted expert scholars from Taiwan and Europe, are run in the English language and are open to the wider public.
Dr. Lipinsky has widely published on Taiwan and China. Her publications are available on her homepage at www.sino-feminae.eu/downloads . She is leading the cooperation with the Taiwan Studies Center at National Chengchi University, Taiwan, since 2009, including, among others, regular bi-lateral Austrian-Taiwanese conference exchanges.
